World Menstrual Hygiene Day 2026 and the Period Promise through the United Way

Period poverty and stigma shouldn’t hold anyone back. On Thursday, May 28th, join us at The Malt and Barley in Kitchener as we celebrate World Menstrual Hygiene Day. We’re coming together to raise awareness, support our neighbours, and stock the shelves of our local food banks.

The Event Details

This is a casual, drop-in social designed to build community and make a tangible difference in the Waterloo Region.

When: Thursday, May 28th, 2026

Time: 5:00 PM – 8:30 PM (Drop-in anytime!)
Where: The Malt and Barley, Kitchener, ON
Admission: FREE with the donation of a menstrual product or a cash contribution.

What to Expect

Come for the cause, stay for the company! We’re keeping things relaxed and impactful:

Inspiring Guest Speakers: Throughout the evening, hear from local advocates and community leaders as they share insights on the state of menstrual equity in Ontario and the importance of accessible hygiene products.
Community Connection: Meet and visit with your labour partners committed to breaking the silence surrounding period health.
The Big Drive: Bring your pads, tampons, cups, period underwear or liners to add to our community mountain of donations.

Period Product Drive & Workplace Pickups

Can’t make it to the pub? You can still participate! We are running a region-wide Period Product Drive leading up to and during the event. All collected items and monetary donations will be delivered directly to the different Food Banks in the Waterloo Region.

For Workplaces: If your office or business is running a collection drive, we want to make it easy for you. Once your team has finished gathering donations, please email joannedelaneyfraser@live.com or fcurnew@uwaywrc.ca to schedule a designated workplace pickup time. They will pick up your donations.

Why It Matters

Menstrual products are a necessity, not a luxury. By donating, you ensure that everyone in our community has access to the supplies they need to live with dignity and confidence.

Let’s turn the tide on period poverty together. See you on May 28th!

La précarité menstruelle et la stigmatisation ne devraient arrêter personne. Le jeudi 28 mai, joignez-vous à nous au Malt and Barley à Kitchener pour célébrer la Journée mondiale de l’hygiène menstruelle. Nous nous réunissons pour sensibiliser le public, soutenir nos voisins et approvisionner les banques alimentaires locales. Détails de l’événement : Il s’agit d’une rencontre informelle et ouverte à tous, conçue pour renforcer les liens communautaires et avoir un impact concret dans la région de Waterloo.

Quand : Jeudi 28 mai 2026 Heure : 17 h – 20 h 30

Où : Le Malt and Barley, Kitchener (Ontario)

Entrée : GRATUITE avec don d’un produit menstruel ou contribution en argent. À quoi s’attendre Venez pour la cause, restez pour le social !

Ambiance détendue et enrichissante :

Conférenciers et conférencières inspirants : Tout au long de la soirée, écoutez des militants et des leaders communautaires locaux partager leurs points de vue sur l’équité menstruelle en Ontario et l’importance de l’accès aux produits d’hygiène.

Lien communautaire : Rencontrez et discutez avec vos partenaires syndicaux engagés à briser le silence entourant la santé menstruelle..

Grande collecte : Apportez vos serviettes hygiéniques, tampons, coupes menstruelles, culottes menstruelles ou protège-slips pour contribuer à notre importante collecte communautaire. Collecte de produits menstruels et ramassage en milieu de travail Vous ne pouvez pas vous rendre au pub ? Vous pouvez quand même participer ! Nous organisons une collecte de produits menstruels à l’échelle de la région avant et pendant l’événement. Tous les articles recueillis et les dons en argent seront livrés directement aux différentes banques alimentaires de la région de Waterloo.

Pour les milieux de travail : Si votre bureau ou entreprise organise une collecte, on veut vous faciliter la tâche. Une fois que votre équipe aura terminé la collecte des dons, veuillez envoyer un courriel à joannedelaneyfraser@live.com ou à fcurnew@uwaywrc.ca pour convenir d’une heure de ramassage à votre lieu de travail. Ils vont venir chercher vos dons.

Pourquoi c’est important : Les produits menstruels sont une nécessité, pas un luxe. En faisant un don, vous vous assurez que toutes les personnes de notre communauté ont accès aux produits dont elles ont besoin pour vivre dans la dignité et la confiance.

Ensemble, luttons contre la précarité menstruelle. On se voit le 28 mai !

April 28th Day of Mourning / Jour de deuil national : 28 avril

Every year, 1000 workers are killed on the job in Canada, not including deaths from occupational disease. We will be gathering near the pavilion in Victoria Park at 10:30 a.m. on April 28th, 2026 to honour victims and their families.

Chaque année au Canada, plus de 1 000 travailleuses et travailleurs perdent la vie à la suite d’un accident de travail, sans compter les décès liés aux maladies professionnelles. Nous vous invitons à vous joindre à nous pour un moment de recueillement et de solidarité en hommage aux victimes et en soutien à leurs familles, au parc Victoria à Kitchener à 10h30 am.

The event features a lineup of films exploring diverse aspects of labour and exploitation, including:

WORKING FOR FREEDOM: Follow an Ottawa woman’s experiences with prison labour at the Ottawa-Carleton Detention Centre, with an overview by author Jordan House on the frameworks that allow these exploitative practices to continue.

GHOST WORKERS: A cinematic research project where six European microworkers share their experiences from recreated home offices, offering a critique on the changing conditions of hidden labour essential for artificial intelligence and the struggle for recognition.

HOMEGROWN: A dark drama, inspired by true events, following Nicole, a Bajan fruit picker on a UK farm who endures exploitative conditions and must take action to expose the harsh realities behind our food supply chain.

THEY CALLED IT THE BUTCHER SHOP: Documents the inspiring five-month strike staged by the women of Fleck Manufacturing in Ontario in 1978 for better wages, safety, and union security.

SHADOW WORK: A short documentary looking at “shadow work”: unpaid and unseen tasks outside an employee’s official job description that are necessary for an organization to function.

CABLES: Tells the story of Manuela, a socially isolated woman with a lung disease who befriends Hakim, a penniless immigrant janitor at her apartment complex.

NOLA: A Black woman working as a sous-chef navigates toxic restaurant culture and her wavering mental health, until a chance encounter changes her.
